What Is a Yellow Fringe?

What Is a Yellow Fringe? thumbnail
Yellow fringe is sometimes found on American flags.

Yellow fringe can be found on many embroidered, sewn and knitted items and, in fact, can be found in many shades. Yellow fringe only takes on particular significance when attached to flags, otherwise it is a purely decorative item used for its aesthetic qualities.

  1. Yellow Fringe

    • Yellow fringe is a thin piece of tasseled fabric that is sewn on the edge of a material such as a cushion, a hem or a flag. It is characterized by an embroidered panel that has yellow (usually looped) tassels hanging from the panel.

    Yellow Fringe and the Flag

    • Yellow fringing can sometimes be seen on the American flag bordering three sides. If yellow or gold fringe is seen attached to the American flag it denotes a military or naval flag that is flown on stationary or army posts. It is also used in courts of law, offices of government officials, parades, inaugurations and dedication ceremonies.

    History & Significance

    • The yellow fringe did not appear on American flags in government or public buildings until 1959. The addition of the yellow fringe is discretionary and the significance of the fringe is still hotly debated. The controversy derives from whether it is "un-American" to place the fringe on flag when the flag is placed in a non-military setting (such as a courtroom).
