The characteristics of handwriting can reveal many of a person's individual traits.

Graphology is the scientific study of personality traits through handwriting analysis. Graphologists believe that people who share the same behavioral characteristics also share the same shapes and forms in their handwriting. Theoretically, graphologists believe that the same style of handwriting is taught to everyone in school and so variations in handwriting are due to personality characteristics.

  1. Real Science?

    • Although the concept of graphology has been an evolving science since the times of Roman emperors, many individuals challenge its authenticity as a "real" science or refer to it as a pseudoscience.

    Handwriting Slants

    • The slant of the letters in the overall sample is thought to reveal how the writer feels about himself and interacts with others.

    Reverse Slant

    • The reverse slant, also known as backwards or left slant, is believed to not be a primary characteristic, but rather represents the concealment -- or cover-up -- of the behavioral traits seen in those who have forward-slanting handwriting.

    Backwards and Negative

    • Those who have a reverse-slant handwriting style are thought to be holding back, which is viewed as a negative trait.

    Behavioral Traits

    • Handwriting analysts also believe that those displaying the reverse slant are afraid to reveal need for others, which results in contradictory behaviors and manipulation of others.
