Pets eat grass for a variety of reasons. Whatever the reason may be, it is important for pet owners to provide their pets with either pet grass or a safe alternative in order to ensure their pets' health. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Identification

    • Pet grass, known scientifically as Dactylis glomerata, is a full or partial sun plant that is a natural supplement containing vitamins and minerals. It is often described as "pet medicine" because it can improve the health of cats, dogs and even birds.

    Dogs and Pet Grass

    • Veterinarian Holly Nash notes that dogs may eat grass not only because of upset stomach but also to fulfill other urges. In the wild, a dog would eat herbivores and the contents of their stomachs and intestines---grass and other plant matter. Domesticated dogs may instinctively crave vegetation as an alternative to that natural behavior.

    Cats and Pet Grass

    • According to the University of Florida, cats may eat grass and other plants in order to eliminate hairballs. It may also be a way of supplementing its diet with vegetation.

    Safe Alternatives

    • Other plants that are nontoxic and safe for pet consumption include catnip, rye grass and wheat grass. Some companies produce pet treats that contain vegetation, which may be used as an alternative to pet grass.
