After removing mold and mildew from a surface in your home, you can disinfect the area with a mixture of bleach and water. The ratio of bleach to water depends on the surface you need to clean. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Clean Surfaces

    • For most clean surfaces like hard plastics, glass and countertops, a solution of 1/4 to 1/2 cup of bleach to 1 gallon of water will clean away mold and mildew. Use a sponge to wipe down the affected area, and allow it to air dry, according to the Minnesota Department of Health.

    Dirty Surfaces

    • For dirty and porous surfaces like wood and concrete, a higher ratio of bleach to water can be used. Mix between 1 and 1 1/2 cups of bleach with 1 gallon of water, and then use the solution to clean the area, according to North Dakota State University.

    Considerations

    • When cleaning with bleach, make sure you are in a well-ventilated area. Wear gloves to protect your skin from the bleach. You can test a small, inconspicuous portion of the material that needs to be cleaned to see if the bleach causes discoloration. Never combine bleach and ammonia-based cleaners.
