Transcriber Certification

Though there is no formal accreditation required to work as a transcriber. Certifications are available for legal transcribers and medical transcribers, so taking the appropriate courses is necessary to find suitable work and obtain the highest possible salary.

  1. Legal Transcriber

    • Legal transcribers are employed by law firms as well as by courts as court reporters. Most employers choose a transcriber certified by the United States Court Reporters Association, the American Association of Electronic Reporters and Transcribers or the National Association for Legal Secretaries.

    Medical Transcriber

    • For a medical transcriber, certification by the Association for Healthcare Documentation Integrity (AHDI) is usually best. Employers prefer to hire someone who has taken classes in anatomy. Medical terminology transcription certification requires attending classes and not simply passing an exam.

    Braille Transcriber

    • Braille transcribers determine the best way to transfer a printed textbook into Braille for use by someone with limited or no vision. They must be fluent in English Literary Braille Code and become certified through a home course offered by the National Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped.
