How to Compare Arch Support for Orthotics

Orthotics are inserts that fit into shoes to provide arch support in the treatment of a variety of foot conditions. Depending on the problem, some over-the-counter orthotics may be helpful. Another option is custom-made orthotics.

Conditions

Orthotics are used to treat foot problems that can stem from poor arch support such as knee pain or pain in the lower back and heel pain from plantar fascitis. In addition, they may be used to correct problems such as gait abnormality or low arches.

Types

Packaged orthotics with arch support are available in pharmacies and retail stores. They are usually made from plastic polymer materials that offer support as well as cushioning for shock absorption. The manufacturer typically indicates on the package the type of problem they are intended to address.

Custom Orthotics

A podiatrist can have custom orthotics made by taking plaster casts of the feet. When the orthotic inserts are made in the lab, corrections are made to the device to provide better arch support.

Considerations

Although over-the-counter orthotics can sometimes help relieve pain by correcting arch support, chronic foot pain should be evaluated and treated by a doctor.
