What Makes a Good Heat Reflector?


Good reflectors of heat are typically lightweight, able to cover a good amount of area and capable of bouncing back large amounts of heat energy. Reflectors of heat can be used to maintain and raise temperatures, in addition to saving money on energy costs.

Color Considerations

  • Color is often a consideration in choosing a good heat reflector. White reflects light and heat, bouncing it off of its surface, whereas black absorbs heat.

Thin and Metallic

  • Lightweight metal aluminum, in the form of foil, is an excellent reflector of heat. The shiny surface of aluminum foil bounces heat waves back to their source, keeping heat loss to a minimum.

Greenhouse Effect

  • Enclosed spaces made of thick panes of glass create a greenhouse effect. The glass reflects the heat off each other and back to the heat source, generating energy.
