Pharmacy Technician Protocol
Pharmacy technicians work with pharmacists and may help with administrative duties and assist customers. While pharmacy technicians must be knowledgeable and informed about pharmaceuticals, there are protocols and limitations to which they must adhere.
-
Certification
-
Pharmacy technicians must be certified in some states. This means they must pass a certification exam held by one of the two national certification organizations, the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board or Institute for the Certification of Pharmacy Technicians. Certification helps maintain a standard of safety for pharmacy customers.
Customer Service
-
Because pharmacy technicians work closely with patients and their families, a level of professional customer service is essential. Pharmacy technicians must be friendly and calm under pressure. At the same time, they must be organized and detail-oriented. Pharmacy technicians must always consult with and defer to their supervising pharmacist.
-
Restrictions
-
Pharmacy technicians may not exercise professional judgment when dealing with patients--only licensed pharmacists may do so. Additionally, pharmacy technicians may not counsel patients, take new oral prescriptions from a physician or health care professional or make final interpretations concerning prescriptions.
