Fingerprint Analyst Training

Fingerprint Analyst Training thumbnail
Fingerprint analysis relies heavily on forensic science.

Originating in the14th century, fingerprint analysis plays an important role in law enforcement and criminal forensics. Several government and private security organizations employ the services of fingerprint analysts.

  1. Scope

    • Fingerprint analyst training encompasses several areas of forensic science, such as the principles of fingerprint analysis, the recovery and interpretation of latent fingerprints and computer-assisted fingerprint analysis using programs such as the Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS). An analyst must also learn to formulate court-admissible reports that adhere to the criteria set forth by the legal system, and learn crime scene operating procedures and protocols.

    Duration

    • Formal degree programs in criminal justice often have fingerprint analyst training as part of their required curricula. Several schools offer two-year associate's degrees in criminal justice, such as Remington College, and others offer bachelor's degrees, such as the American Military University (AMU).

    Cost

    • The cost of training varies with the school and the length of the program. For example, AMU's four-year program costs $30,250 as of October, 2010, and Globe University's associate's degree program costs $435 per credit hour, excluding lab fees and books.
