What Is NTLDR in Windows?
NTLDR is an abbreviation for the Windows NT Loader program. This file operates as a boot loader for Windows NT, which will be present on later versions of Windows 2003, Windows XP and Windows Server 2003. NTLDR does not function with Windows Vista.

Function
-
When a computer with NT Loader is started, the system BIOS (basic input/output system) reads the Master Boot Record to launch the operating system. The Master Boot Record references the NTLDR file during the startup process.
Necessary Components
-
NTLDR works with the boot.ini file to launch Windows NT. Boot.ini contains boot menu configuration settings. Operating systems that are Windows NT-based also require the Ntdetect.com file, which reads the hardware configuration.
-
Common Errors
-
A common error message associated with NTLDR is "NTLDR is missing." This message may occur if the operating system was recently installed or updated, or if the BIOS is outdated. Rebooting the computer using a system boot disc may resolve the problem.
