Kentucky Headlight Height Law

Kentucky statutes describe headlight height requirements for motorcycles and cars.

Kentucky Revised Statute 189.040 sets standards for proper use and adjustment of motor vehicle headlights while traveling on public roads and highways. The law requires that all vehicles (except motorcycles) be equipped with at least two headlights, one on each side of the vehicle.

Applicability

Kentucky's headlight height laws apply to all motor vehicles, including motorcycles and trucks. The statute establishes standards for headlight adjustment in general as well as height requirements.

General Laws

Kentucky law requires that headlights be positioned so as to prevent glare to drivers in both oncoming traffic and when approaching another vehicle from the rear. Additionally, headlights must be positioned so that the height and intensity of headlights can identify persons and vehicles at various elevations at a distance of at least 300 feet using high beams and 100 feet using low beams.

Specific Laws

Headlights while a vehicle is unloaded must be positioned at a height, measured from the center of the headlight, of between 24 and 54 inches to level ground (KRS 189.040(9)).
