Evaluation of Menorrhagia in Teens

Evaluation of Menorrhagia in Teens thumbnail
It is not uncommon for teenage girls to have heavy periods.

Menorrhagia, unusually long and heavy periods, is a condition that may present itself in some teens. Being aware of the condition, its symptoms and causes helps teens and their parents decide if a teen truly has menorrhagia, or a normal period.

  1. Significance

    • A heavy period is often considered menorrhagia in instances where a teen's period lasts for more than a week or when her bleeding fills sanitary pads in less than an hour several times in a row, according to the Kids Health website. While teen girls often have heavy periods, menorrhagia symptoms are more pronounced.

    Considerations

    • Menorrhagia is often caused by an imbalance between the body's estrogen and progesterone levels. It is not uncommon for teen girls to have slight imbalances and heavy periods that may fade over time, notes Kids Health.

    Warning

    • Menorrhagia is also caused by other medical conditions, according to Kids Health. Fibroids, vaginal or cervical inflammation or infection, clotting disorders and thyroid conditions all may lead to heavy bleeding. Teens who have heavy or long-lasting periods should talk to a doctor for treatment options.
