What is the Difference Between an RN-80 and an RN-72 Visa?

The difference between an RN-80 and RN-72 visa depends on whether you will be working in Brazil with or without an employment contract and the type of work that you will perform. Both visas fall into the category of Temporary Work Visa (VItem-V).

RN-80 Visa

The RN-80 Brazilian visa is used by foreign professionals with an employment contract.

Foreign professionals to Brazil seeking an RN-80 visa must have an employment contract (be a paid employee) with a legally established Brazilian or overseas business. However, an employment contract is not necessary for professionals performing consulting work. This visa is officially known as RN-80/08.

RN-72 Visa

The RN-72 Brazilian visa is used by offshore platform crews.

This type of visa is officially known as RN-72/06. It is issued to foreign professionals without an employment contract who will be working as offshore platform crew or as back-up personnel on equipment in Brazilian waters.

Considerations

Fees for both visas are the same and are valid for multiple entries ($140 as of 2010). They must be used within 90 days from the date the visa was issued.
