Vespa Vs. Yamaha Scooters

Vespa Vs. Yamaha Scooters thumbnail
Both Vespas and Yamahas are popular with scooter enthusiasts.

Vespa and Yamaha are popular brands made by companies that have been in the scooter business for decades. Vespa scooters, from the Italian firm Piaggio, have been around since the end of World War II and Yamaha, the Japanese company, started making scooters in 1955.

  1. Models

    • Vespa and Yamaha offer eight to 10 models to choose from. Vespas are known for their vintage style, while Yamahas are recognized for a more modern design. However, Yamaha now makes the Yamaha Vino 125, which parallels Vespa's "retro" style and Vespa now makes the Vespa LX 50 and the Vespa LX 150, which go after the modern look.

    Features

    • Vespa scooters get from 65 to 100 miles per gallon, depending on the model, while Yamaha's scooters range from 89 to 115 miles per gallon. Yamaha scooters offer the option of two- or four-stroke engines. Most Vespas have single cylinder, four-stroke engines. Both brands of scooter feature front and rear drum brakes, disc brakes or a combination of both. Both Yamahas and Vespas sport wide, padded seats, while Yamahas have extra-large underseat storage compartments.

    Cost

    • Yamaha scooter prices ranged from approximately $2,250 to $8,590 as of October 2010. Vespas cost anywhere from $3,199 to $6,899 at the same time period.
