What Can I Carry on a Domestic Flight?

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is a department of Homeland Security and governs the rules of travel within the United States. Restrictions on items carried on domestic flights vary, and airlines should be contacted prior to flying for details on any special or unusual items.

Documents

According to the TSA, adult passengers over the age of 18 are required to show a valid form of identification before being allowed to board their flight. Acceptable forms of ID include a U.S. passport, a U.S. passport card, a DHS "Trusted Traveler" card, U.S. Military ID, a driver's license or other state photo-identity card issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles, a permanent-resident card or a border-crossing card.

Liquids

Small amounts of liquids are allowed but must be put into one-quart transparent plastic zip-lock bags to be screened before gaining access to the flight. Liquids are limited to 3.4 ounces per passenger; larger amounts should be carried in checked luggage. Medicines and baby formula or food may exceed the limit but only in reasonable quantities, and they must be declared.

Tools

Work tools, such as wrenches, screwdriver and pliers, are allowed as carry-ons but must be less than seven inches in length and wrapped or sheathed before boarding. Weapons, firearms and flammable materials are prohibited from hand luggage.
