Purchasing at wholesale can save you a lot of money.

The prices most consumers see when they go shopping is known as the retail price. This price can be as much as 300 percent of the actual price charged by the manufacturer, or the wholesale price. If you are given the opportunity to buy merchandise at wholesale rather than at retail, you can save a significant amount of money.

  1. Direct From Manufacturer

    • One way to buy merchandise at wholesale prices is to purchase it directly from the manufacturer. This way, you are completely circumventing the middle-man between the factory and retailer, and you're also saving the retail mark-up to pay the store employees. Unfortunately, many manufacturers will sell their wares only to those parties that are willing to buy in bulk, or sometimes extreme bulk.

    Wholesale Markets

    • In many areas, there are stores that specialize in selling goods to retailers at wholesale-type prices. They can do this by purchasing huge amounts of goods from the manufacturers, at or below cost, then reselling it to consumers at the original factory price. Sometimes, the store is owned and operated by the manufacturer itself. Well-known stores like this are Sam's Club and Costco.

    Markdowns and Discounts

    • Often, retailers will try to entice customers into their stores by offering specific merchandise at its wholesale price. In some cases, this can be a gimmick, and hidden fees will emerge just before the sale. Other times, the retailers are betting that you will spend the money you saved elsewhere in their store.
