DTV converters function by accepting the antenna signals, converting them to analog and then passing that signal on to your equipment. When comparing converters, make sure that the ones you are considering have the proper connections. Ensure that your antenna will connect to the converter box's input and that the box's outputs match those of your existing equipment.
Scanning

Many DTV converters replace the list of available channels each time they scan for channels. If you need to adjust your antenna to receive different channels, make sure the converters you consider have the "update scan" feature. Update scan will scan for channels, allow you to adjust your antenna, and then rescan, adding any additional channels to the availability list instead of replacing the list with only the new channels found.

Some DTV converter boxes come with extra features, such as remotes than can be used with other equipment or the ability to control a smart antenna. These additional features often come with an extra cost. When comparing converters, make sure that you are not paying for features that you either can't or won't use.
