How Do You Rinse Quinoa?

How Do You Rinse Quinoa? thumbnail
Quinoa are the seeds of a leafy plant native to the Andes region.

Quinoa is a superfood that is nutritionally rich in protein, iron, potassium, calcium and B vitamins. It has a light nutty taste and those with wheat intolerance often prepare quinoa as a substitute. Quinoa has a bitter coating called saponin that you must remove to make it more palatable. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Quinoa in the United States

    • Most quinoa within the U.S. has already been washed and processed before it has been packed and sold, although it may still have some powdery residue from the saponin coating. To prevent the bitter taste of the saponin powder from making its way to your dish, it is best to give the quinoa a quick rinse.

    Saponin

    • If there is no obvious visible presence of the saponin, rinse a few quinoa seeds in warm water. If the water produces soapy suds, it is a sign to cleanse the whole batch of your seeds.

    Rinsing

    • Pour the quinoa in a large bowl filled with cold water and rub the seeds for several minutes to release the saponin resin. Next, put the quinoa into a fine mesh strainer and hold it under running water, rinsing until the water runs clean. Air dry the quinoa or continue to prepare it for a meal.

Thanks for this. I didn't think it really needed to be rinsed. I've made it about 50 times and have never once rinsed it, with no "side-effects."
