DIY Baby Wraps
Carrying your baby in a wrap or sling, also known as "baby wearing," offers convenience, closeness and comfort. Many stores sell pre-made wraps, but you can easily make your own for a fraction of the cost.
-
Why?
-
Mothers around the world have carried their babies in wraps and slings for centuries, due to the many advantages. Baby wearing encourages bonding, leaves the mother's hands free to accomplish other tasks, evenly distributes the baby's weight across the mother's back and shoulders and makes nursing easier and more discreet.
What?
-
To make a baby wrap, use 4 to 5 yards of stretchy jersey knit fabric. Cut the fabric down the center, so that it is approximately 20--25 inches wide. Most knits will not fray, so hemming is not necessary.
-
How?
-
Hold the baby against your chest, back or side. Wrap the material around yourself and the baby, crisscrossing the wrap in layers around both of you. Tie the ends in a knot. Wraps are flexible and offer a variety of options, so find a position that works for you. Different ways to tie the wrap include over one shoulder or both, with the baby in the front, back or on the side.
