The peace symbol originated in London in 1958, according to DesignBoom.com. It was originally designed to be the main symbol for an anti-nuclear activist group called CND, or Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament. The first symbols were made of white fired clay with black writing and came with a note explaining that if a nuclear war took place, the clay symbols would be among the few human artifacts left.

The peace symbol, or sign as it is now known, became popular in the U.S. during the civil rights movement, when it is said that a friend of Martin Luther King Jr. began displaying the symbol during marches. According to DesignBoom.com, the peace symbol came under fire in the 1970s when critics called it a sign of communism and satanism, but the peace sign survived.

Today, the peace symbol is still recognized in many places around the world as a symbol of nonviolence. In Great Britain, the peace sign still remains the logo for nuclear disarmament. The peace sign has never been copyrighted, with the original designer believing it a symbol of freedom that should be available to all.

false information. this symbol is ancient, comes from the runes and means exactly the opposite of peace, ergo war. therefore the more often it is displayed the more war takes place on earth.
