The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that producers and directors earned average wages of $41.77 per hour or $86,870 annually as of May 2009.

Television fields were the top-paying industries for executive producers, according to PayScale, with television broadcasting paying people in this occupation $53,236 to $111,333 per year, while the cable television programming industry paid anywhere from $58,796 to $117,232 per year. New York is the highest-paying city for executive producers, according to PayScale, with salaries ranging from $90,545 to $169,768 per year. Other high-paying cities were Washington, D.C., Los Angeles, Chicago and Dallas. The BLS lists California, with an average annual salary of $120,530, as the best-paying state for producers and directors. New York was second with an average annual income of $114,290 for producers and directors.
