Minimum Paper Weight for Mailing

Minimum Paper Weight for Mailing thumbnail
Mail regulations govern letter thickness, not weight.

The U.S. Postal Services considers thickness when regulating paper mail. Weight is not a factor when mailing letters or postcards. There are different thickness standards for personal letters, flats and postcards.

  1. Types

    • The minimum thickness for paper letters is .007 inch. The maximum thickness allowable is 1/4 inch, according to the USPS.

Flats usually come in manila envelopes and cannot be more than 3/4 inch thick.

The minimum postcard thickness is .007 inches, with a maximum of .016 inch.

    Considerations

    • When mailing parcels, weight and dimensions are factors. According to the USPS, no parcel can exceed a weight of 70 lbs.

    Size

    • Your paper mail also has length and height regulations. The USPS mandates that personal letters cannot be less than 5 inches long or 3.5 inches high.
