Baking staples include powdered items such as flour, sugars, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cocoa, yeast and corn starch. These ingredients are an important part of cakes, cookies, brownies, breads, pies and pastries. Liquid staples including oils and vanilla are also required for most baking projects. Other items that can be considered as staples are tuna and cream soups that can be used in combining other ingredients while making casseroles. Eggs, butter and milk are also vital staples that are commonly used in baking.

Depending on personal preference or the recipe being used, many staples come in different types. White flour is just one option, as some recipes call for wheat flour, bread flour or rice flour. White sugar and brown sugar will both be called for in a cookie recipe, and powdered sugar is needed to make frosting for a cake. Vegetable oil is just one oil needed in the kitchen, as olive oil and even shortening are also staples used in baking.

Staples usually come in large containers designed to provide enough product for multiple uses. Another staple item that comes in handy in a kitchen is plastic storage containers and canisters to hold flours, sugars and other dry staples.
