Are you stuck in a mail loop?

According to the PCMag.com encyclopedia, a mail loop is "a message that is sent to an entire subscriber list rather than the owner of the list." Typically accidental, mail loops can be used for malice as well.

  1. Causes of a Mail Loop

    • A mail loop can be cased by two machines or systems trying to send mail to one another. Some things that commonly cause mail loops are "vacation" or "out-of-office automatic replies," and when an entire e-mail list is listed as a subscriber on another e-mail list.

    Preventing Mail Loops

    • There are several preventive measures that can be taken by the system manager to help prevent mail loops. For example, when using an out-of-office message be sure to set your reception mode, which controls how you receive mail, to "normal." You can also keep track of IDs attached to messages, and ensure your machine cannot send multiple messages to the same ID.

    Software

    • Without a system manager, there are other options for controlling instances of mail loop. There are software systems designed to help prevent mail loops, such as Mailloop 7, which also manages automated e-mails of all kinds.
