How to Be a Good NCO Guide

If you have gained the rank of a non-commissioned officer (NCO), you have distinguished yourself as a leader in the military. Knowing how to serve as a good NCO can help you advance your career goals and also help the soldiers or sailors whom you lead.

  1. Appearance

    • Having a proper military appearance in accordance to regulations plays a paramount role in acting as a good NCO. A good NCO cannot confront a subordinate on his appearance if that NCO's appearance does not measure up to specs. This includes haircut, uniform, and any accessories included as part of the uniform.

    Leadership By Example

    • A good NCO will lead by example. Those under your command will observe every word spoken and every action taken. Your actions and words must be impeccable so as to place your behavior beyond reproach. The NCO needs to present herself as she wants her troops to present themselves.

    Communication Skills

    • Good communication skills play an essential part in becoming a good NCO. NCOs must communicate directives and orders from the section head or company commander in a clear and understandable manner. You need to filter these directives to the troops using correct language syntax and duty-specific instructions.

    Be Caring

    • A good NCO cares about the men and women under his command. The NCO is responsible for the physical and emotional health of their charges. This care extends to the families of those under the NCO's command.
