Safety Issues of Using Gamma Rays

Gamma rays are a type of electromagnetic radiation and are used in cancer treatments, industrial processes and pasteurization. They also occur naturally in soil, water and some food. However, high levels of gamma ray exposure causes health problems.

  1. Features

    • Gamma photons move at the speed of light and easily travel through most substances, including human tissue. Dense materials such as lead act as shields against gamma rays.

    Risks

    • Gamma rays produce ionizing radiation, which breaks chemical bonds and can cause cancer. Exposure to gamma rays can also cause mutations, burns, fetal retardation and radiation sickness.

    Warning

    • You cannot see or feel gamma rays, you must observe any posted warnings about radiation. If you unexpectedly encounter an industrial instrument that has radiation symbols, call your state radiation control program.
