Robert Hooke Microscope Information

Robert Hooke has been credited with inventing the compound microscope, a tool that changed the course of science. Robert Hook was born in 1635 and lived until 1703. During his life, he worked as a curator of experiments for the Royal Society of London. Later in life, he was a professor of geometry at Gresham College.

  1. Micrographia

    • In 1665, Robert Hooke published a book titled "Micrographia." In this book, he detailed how he built the first compound microscope, which allowed him to observe organisms under magnification and with illumination. This book became a best seller of the time.

    Observations

    • Robert Hooke used his compound microscope to view insects, bryozoans, foraminifera, bird feathers and sponges. He used drawings of his microscopic marvels in his book.

    Demonstrations

    • The microscope Hooke built was the most advanced of its time. Hooke demonstrated the use of this instrument at a number of Royal Society meetings. One of his most impressive illustrations was the composition of a cork.

    Discoveries

    • As a result of his invention, Hooke was the first to discover plant cells. It was Hooke who named them "cells." He also discovered bacteria and protozoa with his compound microscope.
