A Drapery Hemming Guide
Windows are made of many shapes and sizes and the draperies to cover them can be plain to decorative. A guide to hemming draperies can be simple hidden hemming to decorative hemming that accents the style of the drapery chosen for a particular window.

Length
-
How much a drapery is hemmed is determined by the where the rods to hang it from are placed. Once these are attached then it can be decided on how far from the floor or a windowsill it will look good at. Hang the drapes on the rods and turn them up to the length desired and mark with straight pins. Take the drapes down.
Straightforward Hem
-
At the point marked by the straight pins, pull out a thread all along the length of the drapery. Another way to show where the fabric will be turned up is to place temporary loose stitching along the length of the fabric.
Face the backside of the draperies and turn up a quarter inch of fabric along the bottom raw edge of the material. Turn this same side up again so that the folded edge just made matches the line where the pins are and the thread has been removed. Pin the material into place until sewn and then sew to hold securely. The stitching can be plain or decorative.

Decorative Hemming
-
Hems don't have to be plain and straight. Once the fabric is turned and sewn to the length that is needed, decorations can be added. Use embroidery stitches to add a decorative finished appearance to the drape.
