How Are Spiral-Cut Hams Made? thumbnail
Spiral-cut hams are made using a special meat slicer.

Spiral-cut hams are enjoyed as much for their decorative appearance as for their flavor. Commercially sold hams get that spiral look from a professional meat-slicing machine. It can also be done at home using a sharp knife and a Lazy Susan. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Slicing Machine

    • The meat slicing machine resembles a vise grip with rotating skewer heads on each end. The ham is squeezed firmly between the top skewer mount and the skewer mounted on the base of the slicer.

    Rotating Blade

    • A rotating blade slices through the ham at an angle, moving upward from the base as the ham is rotated by the bottom skewer mount.

    Spiral Cutting at Home

    • Spiral cut a ham at home by holding it firmly on a Lazy Susan and slicing into it with a knife while rotating the ham.
