Magellan Vs. Garmin Handheld

Garmin and Magellan are two of the most recognizable producers of global positioning systems (GPS) in the world today. Both of these companies produce handheld GPS devices that work in a number of scenarios.

  1. Features

    • Both Garmin and Magellan produce a number of handheld GPS devices. Magellan produces two lines of handhelds which are called the Explorist Series and the Triton Series. Garmin does not have a specific line of handhelds, but produces many devices, each with specific functions.

    Product Comparison

    • Magellan and Garmin's most expensive handhelds are very similar in price, with the Magellan costing $550 and the Garmin $599. Both feature nearly identical features, but the Magellan has one very important feature that the Garmin does not: it is waterproof. Garmin does not produce a handheld that is completely waterproof, while Magellan's entire Explorist Series are all waterproof. The cheapest models produced by these companies are also very similar in price, with the Garmin costing $199 and the Magellan $149. Buyers may feel that they get more for their $149 with the Magellan. The Garmin does not have a color screen, while the Magellan does, and is also waterproof.

    Considerations

    • While Garmin produces a much more extensive line of handhelds, they are priced more highly and arguably offer less than the Magellan handhelds. All of the Magellan handhelds come with preloaded maps, color screens, and barometric altimeters, while some of the cheaper Garmin models come with no preloaded features at all and have greyscale screens.
