What Is a Bed Foundation?
The foundation of a bed doesn't need a box spring, just a mattress. The foundation supports the mattress and can be a very inexpensive item to make at home. Foundation platforms tend to be recommended for foam mattresses. Does this Spark an idea?

Types
-
The bed foundation is a platform made from many materials, such as corrugated board, steel and wood. Platforms can be bought or homemade by nailing wood planks together.
Purchasing
-
Foundations and bed bases can be found at many local furniture stores as well as furniture giant Ikea. They can range in price from as low as $100, as of 2010.
-
Warning
-
Since the foundation is a hard surface and doesn't expand to accommodate the mattress it can shorten the life of a mattress. The springs of the mattress will wear out much faster, making for an uncomfortable sleep.
Benefits
-
One of the benefits to having a platform is the options for color and material. Purchasing a foundation with head and foot boards already attached can aesthetically be more pleasing than just a bed frame.
