Job Duties

In an orthodontic setting, the hygienist has the challenge of treating teeth and gums with corrective and preventive devices attached to them. She must examine irregularly growing teeth and treat related gum maladies. The hygienist answers patients' questions regarding dental care and advises them on how to best clean and cope with the apparatuses.

Skill Requirements

Patience and empathy are necessary to support patients undergoing orthodontic procedures. Knowledge of devices and expected results is needed. Acumen in using a wide range of cleaning and therapeutic equipment is required.

Preferred Background

Dental hygienists must graduate from an accredited dental hygiene training school and be certified by the state in which they work. A high school diploma or equivalent is required for admission to dental hygienist programs. Work experience in a dental care environment is a plus.
