AIDS & How It Affects the Individuals Who Have It

AIDS can affect people socially, physically, financially and emotionally.

The onset of AIDS in an HIV-positive person can be delayed or prevented with proper care. However, due to personal circumstances, such as lack of insurance coverage, late diagnosis or availability of treatment, many people still develop AIDS.

Physical Effects

Having AIDS exposes a person to potentially deadly opportunistic infections and diseases caused by viruses, bacteria or cancer. These diseases affect a person with AIDS by causing a range of symptoms including extreme pain, fatigue and wasting.

Financial Effects

AIDS patients require expensive medications and treatment even though they may or may not have insurance. Further, their illnesses may prevent them from being able to work, making it difficult or impossible to contribute to household finances.

Social Effects

Despite worldwide public awareness and education efforts, AIDS patients still face stigmas and stereotypes that demean and ostracize them. Even members of their individual social circles may not know what things to say or do which can strain their formerly close relationships.
