Fingerprints may be required for a criminal background check in Washington State.

In Washington State, background checks for criminal history are processed through the Washington State Patrol WATCH (Washington Access to Criminal History) program. Employers may also request background checks through private investigators or independent companies.

  1. WATCH

    • A Washington State Patrol WATCH report is typically returned to an employer within seven to ten days. Employers must pay a nominal fee of $10 to obtain the background check. The applicant must sign a consent form and submit fingerprints.

    Third Parties

    • There are a number of third party companies offering background check services. These companies report on more than an applicant's criminal history. They may also confirm education credentials, job history and even conduct credit checks. Depending on the services offered, a background check by a third party company can take several weeks. However, most will return the report within two weeks whenever possible.

    Private Investigators

    • Employers can also hire private investigators to complete thorough background checks. Be aware that some employers are also conducting their own checks via the web and online social networking sites. Legally, an applicant must give permission for a potential employer to conduct a background check. However, it is difficult to prevent an employer from doing his own research. Most employers, regardless of the method they use to complete a background check, will likely request the background check be returned to them within two to three weeks.
