Program Management Institute Certification
The Project Management Institute, or PMI, is a nonprofit organization that offers five certifications for project managers of varying levels of expertise. Certification is a way to demonstrate knowledge of project management terminology and processes.

Types
-
Of the certifications offered by PMI, the Project Management Professional, or PMP, credential is the most important, but others include the certified associate credential for entry-level project managers, or the scheduling professional credential, for those tasked with keeping projects on deadline.
Requirements
-
Eligibility requirements for certification vary depending on the specific credential. Candidates for PMP certification must meet requirements which include either a bachelor's degree and three years of project management experience, or a high-school diploma with five years of project management experience. Candidates take an exam and then earn professional development credits to maintain the PMP credential.

Benefits
-
PMI's certifications are beneficial because they are adaptable between different industries. The continuing-education program ensures that PMI-certified project managers remain abreast of new knowledge and best practices. In addition, the Institute notes that certified project management professionals enjoy salary increases of up to 10 percent.
