What Is Gas Treatment Used for in Cars?

Gas treatments can improve the performance of older or high mileage vehicles.

Many vehicle owners add gas treatments when they fill up to improve the performance of their cars. Gas treatments claim to clean the engine, leading to better gas mileage, less "sluggishness" in the engine performance and a decrease in engine knocking.

Fuel System Cleaners

A gas treatment that cleans the fuel injection system can sometimes help older vehicles with high mileage. The treatment cleans harmful deposits from your fuel system and allows fuel to burn more efficiently. Other treatments, commonly known as dry gas, are alcohol-based and remove water from your tank to prevent your fuel line from freezing and to improve performance in cold weather.

Octane Boosters

Some gas treatments claim to boost the octane of your fuel. Adding an octane booster can increase horsepower and improve the performance of the vehicle. Some octane boosters are designed for off-road or racing use and are not legal for street cars.

Warnings

Many car manufacturers caution against using aftermarket gas treatments, as some contain chemicals that can corrode your fuel system. If you are in doubt, talk to your mechanic or auto parts dealer to get advice on the best course of action. In general, vehicles that are newer or running fine do not need a gas treatment.
