Lineage
-
Extended Spread Sheet database (Essbase), was initially developed by Arbor Software. In 1998, Arbor merged with Hyperion Software. Essbase was retained and continued to be marketed by Hyperion until it was purchased by Oracle in 2007. As of 2009, Essbase is marketed as "Oracle Essbase."
Need
-
As the business intelligence movement grew, so did its data needs. Analysts who initially managed a series of spreadsheets were soon overwhelmed by the shear volume of data. Traditional relational databases proved to be too complex. Essebase was developed as a solution. Essebase is a general-purpose multidimensional database, marketed as a solution for the scalability issues associated with spreadsheets.
