Victorian-Style Interior Decorating

The Victorian Era of the late 1880s remains an influential interior decorating benchmark. Elements of the Victorian style in furnishings, fabrics and colors can make even a modern home a haven of domesticity. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Furnishings

    • The hallmark of Victorian decor is ornate, mostly dark furniture--and lots of it. The Victorian-style room is full of furniture, from huge four-poster beds to tiny footstools in the bedroom to fringed chaise lounges and numerous armchairs in the parlor.

    Fabrics

    • Another important aspect of Victorian decor is sumptuous fabrics. Rich velvets and satins, regal damasks and delicate laces are all incorporated into Victorian decor. Layered tablecloths, beds piled high with linens, and lace and velvet combined for drapes--Victorian decor uses yards and yards of fabric to create a soft, welcoming room.

    Colors

    • Washing fabrics was much more involved in the Victorian Era than it is today, and that's reflected in the colors favored in Victorian design. Rich colors, busy florals and other patterns, along with touches of lace in lighter colors--Victorian style incorporates color schemes that do not show wear and tear.
