Georgia Combat Firearms Law Enforcement Training

Georgia offers combat firearm training for individuals wishing to become police officers. As of Jan. 1, 2006, police officers are required to complete and pass an annual firearms training course to maintain their qualification to carry a firearm.

  1. Training

    • Anyone wishing to become a police officer in Georgia must first complete and pass basic training. Along with required coursework, basic training demonstrates how to safely use and carry a handgun.

    Requirements

    • Officers are also required to take a yearly, one-hour course on agency policy and the use of deadly force. If an officer fails to attend these required courses, he loses his ability to arrest.

    Consequences

    • If an officer fails to qualify, she may be relieved from active duty and stripped of her firearm until she qualifies again.

    Considerations

    • If an officer suffers from a physical impairment that keeps her from completing her annual training, the Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST) department may waive the training. However, if the condition is expected to last longer than 180 days and keeps her from performing her duties, the offices could lose her certification.
