BMI Luggage Limits

Ensure luggage meets BMI baggage requirements before flying.

BMI, the second largest airline at London Heathrow, operates services in the U.K., Europe, the Middle East, Central Asia and Africa. BMI's flight destinations and plane sizes can dictate luggage guidelines, and even frequent flyers should check they are within these limits before flying to avoid confusion.

Checked Luggage

Checked luggage on long-haul flights is by weight. Economy has a maximum of 44 pounds, while business class may take up to 66 pounds. On U.K., Ireland and regional routes, the weight restriction remains, however, economy-class passengers may take only one piece. BMI members are entitled to an extra 44 pounds on all flights.

Carry-on Luggage

Carry-on luggage may be no bigger than 22 inches by 16 inches by 9 inches. Economy passengers are permitted only one item, while business class may take two items. The bag must be easy to lift so that it can be placed in the overhead compartment. Extra personal items such as handbags, purses, satchels, etc, may also be allowed at the discretion of the airline. No liquids exceeding 3.38 ounces may be taken as carry-on luggage.

Excess Baggage

Any luggage exceeding the given weight restrictions will be charged as excess baggage. Charges are applied according to flight destination. A table of charges is available in the BMI excess baggage link.

Sports Equipment

Business and flexible economy passengers are allowed to take a piece of sporting equipment as part of their luggage allowance, provided it is within the weight limit. Economy passengers are subject to a flat-rate fee of $47 per item, as of 2010.
