Heathrow Airport Luggage Restrictions

Heathrow Airport Luggage Restrictions thumbnail
Be aware of luggage restrictions before you travel.

If you are traveling to or from Heathrow Airport in London, you need to be aware of the restrictions on luggage, both in terms of size and what you can and cannot take onto the aircraft.

  1. Cabin Baggage

    • Each traveler is allowed to carry on one item of luggage, measuring no more than 22 inches tall by 17.7 inches wide by 10 inches deep, including wheels, handles and pockets. Larger items must be checked. Exceptions include wheelchairs and walking aids. A laptop computer in a bag counts as your one item.

    Liquids

    • Travelers cannot carry liquids greater than 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) capacity in carry-on baggage and the items must be placed in a transparent, resealable plastic bag no greater than 8 inches by 8 inches.

Liquids include all drinks, hair and shower gels, cosmetics, deodorants and shaving foam. Larger baby food and medicines can be carried if authenticated.

    Baggage Allowances

    • Any item that exceeds the restrictions for cabin baggage must be checked into the hold. Check with your airline to verify allowances before traveling. If your luggage exceeds airline restrictions, you will have to pay an extra charge.

    Carry Items Banned

    • Some items are not allowed to be carried in cabin baggage. These include scissors, tweezers, razor blades, knives, hypodermic needles (unless required for medical reasons), tools, knitting needles, sporting bats, pool cues, darts and all guns.

    Prohibited Items

    • Items that cannot be taken onboard either in the cabin or hold baggage include flammable materials, gas cylinders, infectious substances, instruments containing magnets or mercury, fireworks, non-safety matches, lighters, lighter fuel, paints, thinners, poisons, acids and radioactive materials.
