What Does QED Mean?

QED stands for the Latin--quod erat demonstrandum--"that is demonstrated." QED is a traditional annotation to mark the end of an argument or mathematical proof. Both the meaning and the abbreviation have undergone some evolutions.

  1. It Is Proven

    • As a syntactical device, in a mathematical proof or a philosophical argument, QED makes a claim as well as marks the end of the proof. QED is saying, "It is proven." This is the author saying that he is prepared to let the proof run the gantlet of peer review.

    Fun Fact

    • A lot of mathematicians were involved with development of the Internet. The term QED migrated into Internet slang, and still means, "I've proven it." But it can have a kind of "in your face" edge that issues a challenge--sometimes in jest, sometimes aggressive.

    Proliferation

    • The Free Dictionary lists 32 other definitions for QED, most of them proper names, e.g., Quest Engineering Development. Concepts are also abbreviated QED: quantum electrodynamics, for example. Some QED references are simply more shorthand, such as "quite easily done."
