Beginnings
-
The 3-series began in 1977 in Europe and the second generation saw many more cars developed within BMW's E30 platform, or type of car. The second generation spanned the years 1984 to 1991. The E30 offered significant aerodynamic improvements and the car was generally sportier in design.
Time Frame
-
The E30 platform reached its peak in 1987, when BMW abandoned the concept of reducing power and increasing gas mileage. Though the car is still thrifty with gas, power once again took priority. The 1987 325ci was BMW's first pure convertible.
