Hearing Problems With Huskies

Hearing problems in husky breeds can be caused by a wide-variety of conditions that affect all breeds of dogs. While huskies do not suffer from genetic hearing problems, complications from the hypothyroidism common in the Siberian husky can cause hearing problems.

  1. Infection

    • Ear infections are most common in droopy-eared dogs because the moisture trapped by their ear shape is an ideal breeding ground for bacteria. Infections, however, can also be caused by hormones, and dogs, such as huskies, with hypothyroidism often suffer from chronic ear infections.

    Blockages

    • Blockages caused by fox tails, plant awns or other debris may affect your husky's hearing. These often wedge quite deeply in the dog's ear and should be removed by a vet.

    Trauma

    • Trauma to the ear, whether caused by a bite or even vigorous scratching, can cause an ear hematoma, which may affect your husky's hearing. The ear will often become swollen or disfigured, and will need to be surgically relieved.

    Other Ear Problems

    • While not necessarily causing hearing problems, other conditions can affect husky's ears and cause your dog irritation. Parasites like bugs, ticks, mites, and fleas, for example, cause itching, swelling, and open wounds.
