Paranormal Detection Equipment

An infrared thermometer can accurately detect strange temperature changes.

Paranormal detection equipment is essential for both amateur and professional ghost hunters alike. Not only will the correct equipment increase your chances of detecting paranormal phenomena, it may also lead to that most elusive of things: evidence.

  1. EMF Meter

    • An electromagnetic field meter, or EMF, is an essential tool for all ghost hunters. The EMF measures changes in electromagnetic fields, allowing you to detect otherwise unseen phenomena. A Gaussmeter, meanwhile, is similar to an EMF meter but detects DC electronic fields rather than AC fields.

    Infrared Thermometer

    • Strange chills are often regarded as a sign of paranormal activity. You could use a normal household thermometer, but infrared thermometers are more accurate. A reliable infrared thermometer "will enable you to easily quantify any reports of cold spots or strange phenomena that may occur during your investigation," the Haunted Britain website says.

    Digital Sound Recorder

    • Digital sound recorders are used to record electronic voice phenomena, or EVP. You can leave a handheld device in a room or carry one around during an investigation.

    Motion Detector

    • Infrared motion sensors are a great help when trying to monitor a number of rooms at once, the Ghost Hunting website says. An alarm will let you know if the infrared beam is broken, alerting you to possible paranormal activity.

    Camcorder

    • A camcorder is an important investigative tool. Perhaps the strongest evidence that you can obtain during a ghost hunt is actual visual data. A camcorder with a night vision or infrared option is particularly helpful.
