Serviceberry Shrub

Amelanchier arborea, or serviceberry trees, are known by a variety of names, including Juneberry, downy serviceberry and shadbush. Serviceberry trees are easy to take care of and tolerate a wide range of growing conditions. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Identification

    • Serviceberry is a deciduous large shrub or small tree. It grows between 15 and 25 feet tall. The tree has simple elliptical leaves, smooth grayish bark and olive green young stems. It produces a brief show of drooping white flowers in early spring, followed by edible red fruit that ripens in June. The serviceberry's leaves change to yellowish-orange or red during the fall.

    Growing Conditions

    • Serviceberry trees are native to the Northeastern United States and Canada. They grow from Northern Quebec westward to Ontario and south to Texas. Serviceberries are hardy to USDA zone 4. They thrive in wet, well-drained acidic soil and can grow in either full sunlight or partial shade. They are tolerant of pollution, according to the University of Connecticut.

    Considerations

    • Serviceberry trees are susceptible to mildew and rust infections as well as attacks by borers, scale insects and aphids. Most diseases and insect infestations cause cosmetic damage but do not seriously harm the plant.
