Chevy Pickups are popular for conversion to lowrider vehicles.

The Chevy Series 3100 half-ton pickup truck was produced from 1948 to 1953 with very few changes. The vehicle is popular among lowrider fans because of the styling and because it is relatively easy to find.

  1. Development

    • In 1948 Chevy entered an "advanced design" era with its trucks, making them roomier and more comfortable. The cab was wider and longer, had an adjustable front seat, heat, window defroster and a radio. The 1950 model featured the extra comfort plus some tweaks to the engine. The 3100 was sold until the mid-'50s.

    Engine

    • A stronger, 216-cubic inch engine was offered in the 3100's 1950 model. It produced 92 horsepower and featured a redesigned cylinder head, giving it more torque.

    Lowriders

    • The 1948 through 1953 Model 3100 Chevy trucks are popular with lowriders, who have named the truck "the Bomb." 1950s models of most cars are popular with lowrider fans, though some like '40s and '60s models as well. A lowrider is a vehicle that's modified, using hydraulics, to ride as close to the ground as possible.
