Bib Pattern Instructions

Contrasting bias tape can make an attractive trim for a baby bib.

It seems parents always can use more clean baby bibs, so they make great gifts for friends with a new baby. With a pattern, bibs require minimal sewing skill and are fairly simple to make by hand.

Features

Baby bibs are pieces of cloth tied around a child's neck to keep his clothes clean while he eats. Bibs can be as simple as you like or they can be embellished with little touches like bias binding and appliqué. Making your own bibs lets you use any fabric that strikes your fancy. Many free patterns and instructions are available on the Internet.

Types

Bibs fall into two general types. Symmetrical patterns have two straps of the same length that fasten behind a baby's neck or at the shoulders. An asymmetrical bib has one longer strap that fastens near the front.

Making the Bib

To make a bib, you will need a pattern, instructions, fabric and a few extras. Fabric stores carry cute baby fabrics that are ideal for making bibs. You will need Velcro or press studs for fastening the bib and you might wish to use bias tape and other embellishments. Avoid using tapes that could become twisted around a baby's neck or buttons that could pose a choking hazard.
