Ammonia Safety Training

Ammonia is a gas commonly used as a refrigerant or found in household cleaning agents. It is colorless, but it bears a foul odor. Working with ammonia requires safety precautions to prevent injuries.

  1. Significance

    • According to the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration's electronic informational tool ("eTool") for ammonia refrigeration, one of the greatest hazards when working with ammonia is for the gas to be accidentally released. Coming into contact with low levels of the gas causes skin and eye irritation. The longer the exposure to ammonia, the higher the chances are that the skin and eyes will be severely burned.

    • Training employees to work cautiously with ammonia is imperative to maintaining health and safety. Training programs must inform workers of the proper way to store ammonia, secure refrigeration systems and learn how to identify hazards associated with ammonia.
