Grasshoppers Vs. Crickets
Grasshoppers and crickets frequently appear in lawns and houses during summertime. Both types of bugs exist in the same insect order called Orthoptera. Although they seem alike, there are actually several differences between grasshoppers and crickets. Does this Spark an idea?
-
Diet
-
Grasshoppers are herbivores, meaning they only eat plant life, such as trees, flowers, grass and crops. Crickets are omnivores, which means they eat human food scraps, dead animals, insects, plants or plant roots.
Time Frame
-
Grasshoppers are usually active, singing and eating during the daytime. Crickets prefer to stay hidden and rest in daytime and only come out at night, especially at dawn and dusk.
-
Identification
-
The antennae of crickets are much shorter than the antennae of grasshoppers. The ears are also in a different location, although they are difficult to see on a living insect. Grasshopper ears are on each side of their abdomens, while crickets detect sounds through their legs.
